Automation or Human Assembly

Last night while I was watching swords being forged from Valyrian (Game of Thrones) steel, it made me think of craftsmen.  Have we lost the true value of craftsmen and what has become of their skills?  With everything turning to automation, are we missing the element of human perception and is this affecting our ability to truly improve production in our plants?  Industrial automation was created to reduce human errors and maximize performance, but to err is human, and don’t our errors teach us how to perform better?  Is it possible to design an automation system that comprehends judgment, adaptability and experience?   I suppose automation doesn’t remove the human but changes the human role.  After all, design flaws still exist because the human was unable to predict potential human responses.
